Each year, the consequences of alcohol and other drug addictions devastate the lives of tens of thousands of New Hampshire men and women of all ages and economic backgrounds. Many of the serious social problems confronting society share an underlying thread associated with substance abuse. In 2007 recognizing the scope of the substance abuse problem and the gap in local treatment services, Greater Nashua Mental Health Center launched its Substance Abuse Services Program.

The program provides an array of outpatient services for adults and their families. Participants may continue to work or remain in school, while receiving high-quality treatment. Since the substance abuser is often dependent upon the support of their family, the ongoing cooperation and education of the family is considered an important element of the treatment program. In April 2009, the agency expanded it substance abuse services by offering a comprehensive Intensive Outpatient Program. The program has been approved by four major N.H. insurance companies and meets four nights per week for a period of 4 weeks, followed by a 10 week, once a week Aftercare Program. IOP programs offer a proven addiction treatment model that combines the intensity and best practices used in a residential setting with the flexibility and convenience of nearby outpatient care. Studies have demonstrated that the increased duration of treatment in an IOP program is strongly associated with long-term successful outcomes. Such a program allows people to maintain their usual routines and responsibilities. Costs are lower than traditional residential programs and participants have the opportunity to practice real-world coping skills.

The decision to seek treatment for addiction is never an easy one. If you still have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact the Substance Abuse Program at
